Making Tax Digital

Here's what you need to know about MTD for Income Tax, and how we can help.

Are you ready for MTD for Income Tax?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is the UK government's plan to move the tax system online. It means many small business owners will need to keep digital records and submit updates to HMRC every quarter, alongside their annual tax return.

MTD isn't mandatory for everyone just yet. However, if your turnover exceeded £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year, you'll need to sign up and submit your first quarterly return by the 7th August 2026.

First quarterly return due: 7th August 2026

The good news is that it doesn't have to be complicated. You can keep using a spreadsheet for your bookkeeping and use bridging software to submit your returns, or you can sign up to accounting software. If you're unfamiliar with using accounting software and have no prior bookkeeping experience, we'd always recommend using spreadsheets.

If you're on a budget, this is absolutely something you can learn to manage yourself, and we can show you how, step by step.

Or, if you'd rather take it off your plate, we offer a done-for-you service, including MTD-compatible software, so everything is handled for you.

We know that not every Sole Trader wants to, or can afford to, outsource their Bookkeeping. That's completely understandable. Most people start a business because they're brilliant at what they do, not because they have a background in finance.

We're passionate about making sure every Sole Trader has accurate, compliant Bookkeeping, regardless of their budget. That's why we've created a range of support packages designed for people who do their own Bookkeeping but want the reassurance that they're on the right track.

These packages aren't just for those who are mandated into Making Tax Digital. They're suitable for any Sole Trader who wants to build good Bookkeeping habits, stay compliant, and feel confident that their records are accurate.

Doing your own Bookkeeping is absolutely achievable, and many people do it successfully. However, we'd always recommend learning the fundamentals first. Understanding the basics of Bookkeeping will help you avoid common mistakes, keep accurate records, and make managing your business finances much less stressful.

Whether you simply need a helping hand, a compliance check, or ongoing support alongside your own Bookkeeping, we're here to help you stay organised, compliant and in control. Pick the level of hands-on help you need, from monthly co-bookkeeping sessions to quarterly reviews and MTD updates.
